Caution Pays: Choosing the Optimal Crib Set

Anyone who doesn’t have their whole nursery absolutely planned out will likely be frustrated (and possibly terrified!) by the big selection of nursery decor items that are available. If you’re looking for an animal design, you can find just about anything you can imagine, from a caterpillar baby crib bedding set to giraffes. Angels are another popular theme, both for shoppers and designers. There are hundreds of different bedding sets to select from. The more popular the theme, the worse it gets. Don’t even get me started on nursery rhymes or cartoon characters!
Whether it’s boy baby bedding or baby girl, it can be really hard to stick to a budget, because everything is irresistibly cute. To be a bit blunt, that designer bedding set you paid $1000 for is going to go through the same spitup and diaper leaks as a $200 set. So now you might be wondering what you baby actually does need. Here are some of the things:
- If you are considering crib bumpers, be aware that they have certain risks associated with them. It is all too simple for an active infant to pull a bumper loose and get it over his or her face. If this happens at night, a parent may not even realize until the next morning. When installing bumper pads, be sure to follow all safety guidelines. Keep ties on the outside of the bed, and secure them tightly. Even better, take the pads out of the crib for the first year.
- The term “crib sheet” refers only to the fitted sheet, because flat sheets are unnecessary (and potentially dangerous) for newborns. When buying crib sheets, be sure you know the size of your mattress first. If the sheets don’t fit snugly, they may peel off the mattress. Not only is this annoying, it’s a serious health risk. Think about buying a waterproof mattress cover, because babies are messy creatures! And avoid white sheets, they’re really not a good idea.
- Since loose blankets can also be a hazard, stick to a sleep sack or warm PJs instead of a quilt. And don’t overbundle the baby - he doesn’t need to be any warmer than you do. There’s one other serious safety hazard you should be aware of: stuffed animals and pillows.
When selecting a crib set, first make sure it’s safe. With so many options available, you can still find something cute.
