Baby memorabilia does not belong in the ‘throw-away society’ of this day, we tend to hold on to many of their items. Even so, when you’re expecting a baby, people can’t wait to pass on their cribs and crib bedding. Because babies are expensive business, be grateful for those offerings of baby bedding and baby cribs. Before using any baby bedding, be sure that it is absolutely safe.
Whether it is a Moses basket or a crib, your baby’s first crib is the most memorable. If someone has been kind enough to give you their crib you’ll most likely want to clean it up and perhaps repaint it. It is a good idea to check the safety of the crib while you are in the process of refinishing it. Even new baby bedding and cribs should be checked for safety. If you plan on using a cradle made of wicker, there are a couple things to consider: First make sure the wood is in good condition and there aren’t any loose or broken pieces and second check the condition of the mattress because many times this is the piece that needs to be replaced. Be careful that you do not have loose threads or pieces of material for the baby to shove into his or her mouth when fitting the skirt.
When choosing the drapes, it’s a very good idea to consider ones that can’t shed threads or pieces of material that the baby can grab or put in their mouth. The Juvenile Product Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in the USA and British Standards(BS) in the UK concerned about the safety of baby furnitures, warn that new furnitures and bedding should be purchased for the crib if possible. If a product has a JPMA seal of approval or a BS ‘kite’ mark then you know that they’ve been tested and will meet all the necessary safety requirements.
Previously used items are fine as long as they still meet safety stipulations because it’s economical and environmentally correct to recycle usable baby bedding. Since your baby will be in his or her crib for extended periods of time it is important you spend the time inspecting it. You need to take all the necessary precautions to ensure your babies safety and well being. Here are some tips to bear in mind when assessing the safety of the equipment you have for your baby. First off, always make sure to check for spots where a child’s clothes might get caught and any chipped, loose, or toxic lead paint. Always make sure the bars of the crib are closer than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and the head and foot board of the crib should be solid with no holes, to prevent baby’s head from getting caught between them. A sturdy crib requires tight joints and fixings. It’s critical that the side rail’s raising and lowering mechanism stays fully secured when raised in place, and one should be able to manage this simple task with one hand. The final point to verify is that the mattress is clean and firm and the top of the side rail is at least 22 inches above the mattress.
A new baby deserves a new mattress all their own, but always make sure it fits properly and snugly in their crib. Nursery bedding can be hazardous so it is important to make sure that all the bumpers strings are tied down or just remove the bumper absolutely. Avoid duvets, quilts or sheepskin totally as they would overheat. Put something to measure the temperature and utilize blankets and sheets in the room. Keep the crib away from cords on lamps, window blinds and curtains and also keep the crib away from other furniture the baby can climb on, babies are very good climbers!
Please have a safe and enjoyable time with your infant, as they swiftly mature.
