Children’s Ballet: Tips So You Can Help Them Learn

Ballet is a kind of dance set to music. Itis a highly stylized dance form that embraces smooth, graceful movements. Theactual word for ballet comes from the Italian word “balleto ” which derives its meaning from the Latin word “ballare ” meaning to dance. Ballet is more than about dancing on one’s toes though. Through the stylish movements a story is told. Acting, miming and fluid movements tell the story all while accompanied by either orchestra or vocal music. People have long observed ballets as a technique to escape from their lives and enter into a fairy-like realm full of dancing Prima ballerinas and pirouetting dancers.
What is the History of Ballet?
Ballet can trace its roots to the 15th century Italian court where folks would become concerned in these elaborate dances complete with court manners, lavishly stylized clothing and accurate movements. The form of ballet as is understood now wasn't the same as it was then. It was not until the movement set in motion by King Louis XIV to reanimate the flagging dance work and make it into the stylish movements and 5 essential steps that classical ballet has today. It was through his efforts that the Paris Opera Ballet was conceived and nurtured. Today’s ballet is found in three different forms : classical, neoclassical and modern.
How Does Ballet Work?
Ballet works by mixing fluid, classy movements with a rhythm set by either orchestra or vocal music. The point of the dance is to make and tell a story to the audience. Dancers use types of miming, acting and dance to tell this story. The different forms of ballet each use different strategies for enacting this story. A modern ballet company may use a selection of dancing methodologies that is very different from the classical movements. Each member of the ballet company has a very express role from the backup ballerinas to the Prima ballerina.
What does it take to become a ballet dancer?
There must be a love for the dance in order to become a ballet dancer. The dancer must start at an early age learning all there is to know about the different movements and education behind this form of dance. As well as this information the dancer must develop powerful leg and core muscles to help support him or her during the intricate movements that need strength, agility and flexibleness. Only later during the course of training when the strength in the ankles and legs has been developed does the dancer learn to use pointe shoes. The pointe shoe is used by the women and the men go on with soft soled shoes so as to learn the more sophisticated jumps and turns that will be expected of him. Discipline and training is the core to the dance and without it the dancer may become hurt seriously.
For anyone wanting to learn ballet there are serveral ballet terms that they need to know :
- Attitude is the dance movement most associated with the pointe which is when the ballerina stands on her toes and keeps the other leg up and curved around for flexibility and stability.
- The Arabesque is the movement where the hind leg is extended and the dancer leans forward over the load bearing leg. This is a classical movement that is practiced in the different forms of ballet.
- Basic positions - first position (heels together, toes pointed out), second position (feet about hip width apart, toes pointed out), third position (toes pointed out, right foot touching left at right angles in the middle of the left foot), fourth position (feet are placed the same as third position, but one step apart.), fifth position (With both feet touching, the toes of each foot reaches the heel of the other)
Doing children’s ballet is asuperb experience but sometimes attending a class is not enough to understand all a dancer wishes to understand. Getting additional help with ballet positions is an excellent investment that you can refer to multiple times over.
